Telecommunication Company (STC), to conduct an investigation for
three Exchange Buildings located in Makkah to appraise the
structural condition of these buildings. STC was concerned about the
condition of the structures, because STC wanted to add some
additional exchange work capacity by adding more equipment and
systems.
The objectives of the structural appraisal works were to identify
and provide information on any signs of deformation, distress and
damages in the overall structure of the exchange building and to
determine the condition of concrete, concrete material and steel by
considering the results of various research, inspection and testing
activities. The scope of work included the following:

Cores from columns and footing to test for compressive strength.
**
Petrographic analysis from a sample of core.
**
Chemical analyses from cores to test their chloride and sulfate
content.
**
Ultrasonic pulse velocity test at various locations to determine the
characteristics of cracks in structural elements.
**
Schmidt hammer test at various locations to test the concrete
strength at surface.
**
Cover meter survey to measure the cover to steel.
**
Breakouts to examine and record the properties and quality of the
concrete and steel.
**
Excavation pits at appropriate locations to expose footing and
retaining wall.
